Getting About In Anguilla
When in Anguilla, one normally gets around in a hire cars or taxis. When hiring a car a temporary driver's permit (minimum 3 months) is required and costs US$ 6.00. In Anguilla one drives on the left.Taxi rates are set by government - there are no meters. Posted rates are for one or two persons; additional persons cost a few US$ dollars extra. There aren't any regular bus services as such. The accepted driving speed is 30 mph (47 kph) where roads permit.
Do watch out for the occasional goat, cow or the turtle dove (the National Bird) ambling or strutting across the road, oblivious (at times) to traffic as they wander around in search of food. There is little to no signposting in Anguilla so when you are in a hire car cross-referencing local landmarks with a roadmap will be necessary at first. The orienteering specialists among you will enjoy this process immensely! For the more adventurous and energetic there are bicycles for hire. Anguilla's gentle topography ensures that strenuous climbs and perilous descents are kept to a minimum. Sightseeing trips around the island can be arranged through a local tour operator; taxi drivers offer these trips too - their fees are negotiable.
