Anegada information page

Anegada is the outlier as far as the British Virgin Islands are concerned. Some 15 miles (24 km) to the north of Virgin Gorda, Anegada is 11 miles (18km) long by 3 miles (5km) wide and only 28 feet (10m) tall at its highest point. From Beef Island in Tortola it takes only 11 minutes to fly to Anegada. The name actually means 'inundated' or 'drowned' and the odd wave may still find its way into the ponds that lie inland. It is a flat, gentle curve of a coral island, unlike its volcanic neighbours to the south, and over the last few hundred years many ships have unwittingly crashed into the coral reef that surrounds it.

Anegada has excellent white sand beaches and a extensive coral reef bordering its calm shores. Small hotels and guest houses are available and activities (apart from lounging around in breezy seclusion) are scuba diving, snorkelling and sport fishing. The myriad of tropical fish and reef formations plus the 300 or so shipwrecks make for make for excellent diving. Understandably, seafood features highly on the menu. The lobster, by all accounts, is among the very best in the Caribbean. Good beaches can be found at Cow Wreck Beach, Widlass Bight, Loblolly Bay and Pomato Point.

About 250 residents inhabit the island and they all live at The Settlement. Other residents include Rock Iguanas and flamingos - these magnificent birds can be found at Flamingo Pond in the central area of the island. Anegada is quiet, straightforward and secluded with the minimum of hustle, bustle and fuss. It is this that makes it rather special.
