Introduction To Saint Kitts

‘Saint Kitts’ is also known as St. Christopher – named by Columbus in 1493  after his patron saint during his famous voyage. With everything from beaches to rainforests and wonderful Creole and West Indian architecture in the capital, Bassterre, there is plenty to like about the island, and much to enjoy.

The Circus is the focal point of Basseterre. In the centre stands The Clock Tower, a memorial built in 1883 to The Honourable Thomas B.H. Berkeley, a local planter and politician.

Its people are of mixed origins, though primarily of African descent (around 86%). The island is volcanic in origin and shaped like a baseball bat with its highest point standing at 1,156m (3792 ft), Mount Liamuiga – an extinct volcano. Rainfall levels are higher in the hills, and rainy season extends from May until November.
