Introduction To Nevis

Nevis is conical in shape, with a volcanic peak at its centre. The clouds enveloping the peak were given the Spanish name Nuestra Señora de las Nieves ('Our Lady of the Snows'),  a reference to the story of a 4th century Catholic miracle: a snowfall on a mountain near Rome. Presumably the white clouds that usually cover the top of Nevis Peak reminded someone of this story of a miraculous snowfall in a hot climate.

Location Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean
Co-ordinates 62' 30' W 17' 0' N
Size 36 Square miles (58 sq. km)
Capital Charlestown
Language English
Population 12,106 (2006 est.)

Its people are of mixed origins, though primarily of African descent. The island is essentially a big, beautiful, volcanic mountain rising to nearly 3200 feet (975m), often shrouded in cloud.
